چکیده

Ultraviolet, optical and near infrared images of the nearby (D ≈ 5.5 Mpc) SBm galaxy NGC 1311, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, reveal a small population of 13 candidate star clusters. We identify candidate star clusters based on a combination of their luminosity, extent and spectral energy distribution. The masses of the cluster candidates range from ∼10 up to ∼10 M⊙, and show a strong positive trend of larger mass with increasing with cluster age. Such a trend follows from the fading and dissolution of old, low-mass clusters, and the lack of any young super star-clusters of the sort often formed in strong starbursts. The cluster age distribution is consistent with a bursting mode of cluster formation, with active episodes of age ∼10 Myr, ∼100 Myr and &1 Gyr. The ranges of age and mass we probe are consistent with those of the star clusters found in quiescent Local Group dwarf galaxies. Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under NASA contract No. NAS5-26555. Formation History of Stars and Star Clusters in Nearby Galaxies

We present first results from an HST/ACS imaging survey of stars and star clusters in five nearby spiral galaxies. This contribution concentrates on NGC 1313, a highly distorted late-type barred spiral. We compare the field star and cluster formation histories in our three ACS pointings for this galaxy. In one pointing, both the cluster and field star age distributions show clear evidence for a...

Spatial Distribution of Faint Fuzzy Star Clusters in NGC 5195

We present a study of a faint fuzzy star cluster system in the nearby SB0 galaxy NGC 5195 interacting with the famous spiral galaxy NGC 5194 (M51), based on HST ACS BV I mosaic images taken by the Hubble Heritage Team. We have found about 50 faint fuzzy star clusters around NGC 5195 which are larger than typical globular clusters with effective radii reff > 7 pc and red with (V − I) > 1.0. They...

Discovery of a Transient X-ray Source in the Compact Stellar Nucleus of Ngc 2403

We report the discovery of an X-ray source coincident with the nuclear star cluster at the dynamical center of the nearby late-type spiral galaxy NGC 2403. The X-ray luminosity of this source varies from below detection levels, ∼10 erg s in the 0.5 − 8.0 keV band, to 7×10 erg s on timescales between observations of <2 months. The X-ray spectrum is well-fit by an accretion disk model consisting ...

Young massive star clusters in nearby galaxies ⋆

1 A detailed description is given of the data analysis leading to the discovery of young massive star clusters (YMCs) in a sample of 21 nearby galaxies. A new useful tool, ishape, for the derivation of intrinsic shape parameters of compact objects is presented, and some test results are shown. Completeness tests for the cluster samples are discussed, and ishape is used to estimate cluster sizes...

Title : The Next Generation of Numerical Modeling in Mergers - Constraining the Star Formation

Spectacular images of colliding galaxies like the "Antennae", taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, have revealed that a burst of star/cluster formation occurs whenever gas-rich galaxies interact. The ages and locations of these clusters reveal the interaction history and provide crucial clues to the process of star formation in galaxies. We propose to carry out state-of-theart numerical simul...
